What's happening between Anthem and Sentara?

January 2027 Calendar with Highlighted First.webp

Sentara Health has announced that negotiations with Anthem regarding Medicare Advantage coverage have ended without a new agreement.

As a result, Sentara is expected to become out-of-network for affected Anthem Medicare Advantage plans beginning January 1, 2027, unless the situation changes.

For now, affected members can continue receiving in-network care from Sentara providers through December 31, 2026, subject to their current plan benefits.

This is particularly important for Hampton Roads residents who have established relationships with Sentara physicians, specialists, and hospitals.

The important thing to remember is that you do not need to rush into changing your coverage.

Should You Change Your Medicare Plan Right Now?

Retha recommends taking a cautious approach.

Although Sentara has announced the end of negotiations, there is still time before the changes are scheduled to take effect.

Retha recommends allowing until the end of October to see whether there are any further developments or a possible resolution.

If the situation remains unchanged, she will begin helping individuals who want to keep their Sentara doctors explore other Medicare plans that may include their preferred providers.

The goal is to make the right decision for your healthcare needs, not a rushed decision based on uncertainty.

What to remember

You have time to review your options. Don't make a change to your Medicare coverage without understanding how it could affect your doctors, prescriptions, and costs.

What Happens If Anthem and Sentara Don't Reach an Agreement?

If the situation remains unresolved at the end of October, Retha will begin helping individuals who wish to keep their Sentara providers review other Medicare coverage options.

Not everyone will need to change plans. Your choices depend on your individual healthcare needs and the coverage available in your area.

Retha can help you:

  • Review your current Medicare coverage.

  • Understand how the changes may affect your doctors and hospitals.

  • Explore available plans that include your preferred Sentara providers.

  • Compare prescription coverage, benefits, and costs.

  • Decide whether making a change is right for you.
